CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Reverend Darin Lamar Jones, Director of Discipleship & Christian Education

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." - Matthew 28:19-20

The Greater Allen Cathedral has a long history of commitment to education. Our thriving educational programs are a testament to our church's determination to minister to the spiritual and scholastic needs of the entire person. The Christian Education Ministry oversees the spiritual education and formation of the church with a specific emphasis on Greater Allen’s adult population.

The Discipleship Ministry serves to receive and integrate new converts and prospective members into The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York Family. The assimilation processes are designed to encourage Christ-centered living, help new members identify ministries within the church that they can serve and be accountable to, and certainly understand the Biblical mandate of discipleship. Ministry members also assist new converts and those who have made a decision to rededicate their lives to our Lord Jesus by offering prayers and providing pertinent resource information, should the need for additional assistance arise.

The Discipleship and Christian Education Ministries work collaboratively to host Greater Allen’s New Members Classes, New Member Receptions, Designed for Discipleship Class Series, 4.4.4 Short Term Intensive Bible Study Classes and Back to Church Sunday Evangelistic Initiative. The Discipleship and Christian Education Ministries employ a variety of avenues to facilitate the spiritual health of Greater Allen’s congregation.

The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral's commitment to educating the congregation and the community remains strong and central to the mission of our church.

NEW MEMBERS CLASSES

Greater Allen’s New Members Classes are designed to provide everyone who joins Allen with a resolute understand of the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith. The New Members Class Curriculum is composed of five classes that discuss the attributes of God, A.M.E doctrine, the importance of worship, biblical literacy, stewardship and tithing. These classes can be taken over five consecutive Thursdays or three consecutive Saturdays. They are in session throughout the year. The exact schedule and date for classes can be received via the church office at 718-406-2600 ext. 0

"DESIGNED FOR DISCIPLESHIP" CLASS SERIES

The “Designed for Discipleship” Class Series is a collection of ten twelve-week classes taken sequentially over a three-year period. This series was created to advance the spiritual maturity of each participant. The Designed for Discipleship classes explore a broad range of topics including intercessory prayer, Christian doctrine, Jesus’ character, and the role of The Holy Spirit. These classes give their students the tools needed to become well-rooted impactful disciples. They operate on a trimester schedule and occur January through March, April through June and September through November.

4.4.4.

4.4.4: Four Weeks, Four Books of the Bible, Four Journeys into God’s Word is a short-term bible study series that features four different classes each focused on the in-depth exploration of a specific biblical text. All four classes are held simultaneously during a four-week period. Participants select one of the classes to attend for the entire session. 4.4.4. typically occurs three times a year during the months of March, June and October.

THE HARVEST MOVEMENT

The Harvest Movement is an evangelistic initiative of The Greater Allen A.M.E Cathedral of New York. Harvest, as it is affectionately called, is designed to equip Greater Allen’s congregation with the skills, courage and experience necessary to effectively engage in relational and initiative evangelism. The Harvest Movement offers four-week long evangelism classes frequently thorough the year. These classes cover almost everything that one needs to know to effectively share their faith. Exact class times can be received via the church office at 718-406-2600 ext. 0. Harvest also hosts monthly evangelism outings that allow members to actually go in the community and engage in initiative evangelism. Exact outing times can also be received from the church office at 718-406-2600 ext. 0.

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY

Back to Church Sunday is an evangelistic event designed to introduce unchurched community members to Allen. This initiative also creates an environment that intentionally encourages disengaged church members to recommit themselves to church membership. Back to Church Sunday occurs on the third Sunday in September each year. It is preceded by approximately six weeks of street evangelism, community engagement and palm card distribution.

NEW MEMBER RECEPTIONS

New Member Receptions offer those newest to the Greater Allen’s family the opportunity to mingle and dine while learning of ways to get involved with Allen’s ministries. Pastors Floyd and Elaine Flake grant personal greetings during this event. Many of Allen’s most crucial ministries attend and offer descriptions of their activities and meeting times. These receptions are typically offered once in the spring and once in the fall every year. Each new member is encouraged to attend at least one of these receptions.
